Kingston - Ontario

Kingston, a city with more than 120.000 inhabitants, is located on the shores of Lake Ontario.

Due to the many buildings of gray limestone, like the great prison at the Olympic marina, Kingston is also called Limestone City. In 1976 the Olympic sailing competitions were held in the marina.

Once founded as a simple fur trade station, the city was conquered by the English in 1758. They built the Fort Henry to secure the commercial shipping on the St. Lawrence River and the Rideaukanal which was completed in 1832. From 1841 to 1844, Kingston was the first capital of the united Canadas.
