Grand Master’s Palace Rhodes

The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes in the City of Rhodes is one of the main attractions of the island of the same name.

It was built on the highest point of the city. Today it is assumed that it was the original location of the Colossus of Rhodes.

Rhodes Harbor with Grand Master Palace

Coming from the harbor, you have to overcome numerous fastening walls and ditches till you stand in front of the entrance with its impressive towers. This area is the only one that is still in its original condition, after in 1856, the palace was badly damaged in some parts by an explosion of the ammunition depot.

Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes

The Grand Master Palace was built by the multinational forces of the Knights of the Cross for the Grand Master of the Order of St John in Rhodes in the 14th century. Not till 1522, Rhodes was conquered by the Ottomans under Suleiman the Magnificent, after months of siege. Italians occupied the island in 1912 and the Grand Master's Palace was rebuilt not in the original size but in 1.5-fold size.

Inside Grand Master Palace

The Grand Master Palace was planned as residence for the Italian king and later for Mussolini. In both cases, the planning was swept away by history.

Today it houses the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes.
